Before we migrated to our current site Chris James Mind Body, we had an area in our old website, where customers could leave questions about the products that we sell and their experiences.

Please see below for an assortment of the questions that we have been asked over the years.

Who knows, maybe you could find your query answered here?

Can I use fresh spices in my food? can I use coconut oil, it says it’s used in a recipe but not on the yes list?

Hi Catherine

Great to hear from you!

Yes, of course you can use fresh spices on your food.

Coconut oil works well with the cleanse

Soup! Hi, I too am just about to start the power phase tomorrow and am feeling great after 6 days already. A question, can I drink soup on the power phase along with fruit and veg juices? And if so what sort of soup is allowed? It would be nice to have something warm on a cold day.

Hi Diana,

Soup is absolutely fine during the Power Phase! There are plenty of recipes on the website….

Good Luck!

Almonds and walnuts

How much should I consume these nuts on a daily basis during cleanse? Can I have nuts in power phase?

Hi Apple,

You can take a small handful of nuts on a daily basis.

Better to stay clear of nuts during Power Phase.

Thanks,

Chris
Naturally dried organic apricot

Today is my 4th day. So far so good. But I’m feeling rather tired. I couldn’t perform very well during 1.5 hours yoga class (was very painful) last night and 30 minute cx workout this evening. I could barely lift myself for the plank. I think I’ll slow down during cleanse and just do some gentle stretches.

Fruit juices during power phase: There is a lot of sugar in the juices, would not cause any issue?

What should be ratio between the fruit juice intake and veg juice intake dying power phase?

Hi,

Some people experience tiredness at different stages of the cleanse. This is just your body gearing towards cleansing.
It maybe an idea to cut down on your Yoga & exercise until your energy levels return, which they will.

Focus mainly on vegetable juices which have less sugar. Apples & pears are okay as they cross over well.

Hope this helps?

Chris

Sun dried tomatoes and oat milk

Am I allowed sun dried tomato and oat milk during the cleanse?

Hi Apple,

Very good question:

Yes, you are allowed sun dried tomato (not too many) and yes oat milk during the cleanse is ok.

Thank you,

Chris

Colonics

1. If I have regular bowel movement and going to toilet regularly every morning, do I still need colonic irrigation therapy during the power phase?

2. Pineapple is a no, but your have pineapple in some of your smoothie recipes?

3. Is it ok to have tinned pulses during the prep phase?

4. Am I allowed olives during the 12 days period?

Hi Apple,

In response to your queries:

It is possible to complete the Cleanse without a Colonic, however to optimise the effects of the Cleanse it is recommended to do at least one colonic session, possibly two. Remember to use an ARCH member.

Yes, it is ok to take a very limited amount of pineapple, just not as a main constituent in your daily intake.
Better to go from raw…

Yes, but natural, and not the ones soaked in brine / sugar / salt/

I hope that this helps?

Thanks

Nuts & Pineapple in the Power Phase Juices?
Hi,
I am on day 7 of the Cleanse and so far so good. I am feeling great and the weight is dropping off – 7lbs so far but I imagine it might slow down from here on. Just a few questions on what I can and cant eat:

– Can you have avocado, gherkins, jalapenos and the muesli throughout the whole cleanse?
– Some of the juice and smoothie recipes contain nuts, pineapple, rice milk. Can you have these as part of the Power Phase of the Cleanse?
– On the power phase if you can’t get or make a fresh juice is an innocent smoothie or tropicana orange juice the next best option?

Hi Niki,

How are you?

In response to your queries:

– Can you have avocado, gherkins, jalapenos and the muesli throughout the whole cleanse?

Limit your avocados to 1/2 per day. No gherkins! (vinegar acts as a sugar) jalapenos ok, as long as not too hot. Muesli ok, apart for the Power Phase unless you want to liquidate it?

– Some of the juice and smoothie recipes contain nuts, pineapple, rice milk. Can you have these as part of the Power Phase of the Cleanse?
Very Good Point you have raised here. Better to abscond from nuts altogether during the Power Phase.

– On the power phase if you can’t get or make a fresh juice is an innocent smoothie or tropicana orange juice the next best option?
Aim to drink as much raw freshly pressed juice as you can. Press and drink. Try to find a juice bar close to you OR if there is not, take some in to work with you.

I hope that this helps?

Chris
Thanks,

Tea
Hello I’m a total tea junkie!!! Is it possible to swap to decaffinated tea???
Hi Emma,

Thank you so much for your query!

Unfortunately, decaf tea still has a little caffeine, herbal teas are definitely the way forward!!

Let me know if you need any more help,

Healthy regards,

Chris
A couple of queries..
Hi Chris.
I’ve just started the cleanse and have a couple of queries. Is it okay to include Dijon mustard to mix in with the oil and lemon juice as a salad dressing?
Also can we have Vegetable falafel s? They are vegan but contain wheat flour?
How about pearl barley?
Thank you for your time.
Sophie
Hi Sophie
How are you?
Afraid, no to Dijon mustard!

Yes to Vegetable falafels? Try and use a good quality wheat flour made from whole grains

Let me know how you get on…
Hi Chris.

Thank you. No Dijon mustard for me then!

Unfortunately I felt rather ill last night, I started my period and do suffer with menstrual cramps and nausea. I was also very busy doing massages all day at work. I had to take my medication Mefenamic Acid and it didn’t seem to mix well with some of the supplements.

I feel better this morning after a good night sleep with a hot water bottle on my tummy..

I’m working again today and will see how I go. Hopefully I won’t need to take any medication and can carry on taking the supplements as normal.

I perhaps should have waited to do the cleanse after my cycle had finished..? Got a bit too keen.

Has anyone else had any problems like this as far as you know?

Apart from that I’m really enjoying the healthy eating and juices.

Thank you for your time.

Sophie.
Hi Sophie,

Nice to see you earlier!

Hopefully our chat answered your queries?

Let me know how I can help you further?

xx

Hi Chris.

I have am now coming to the end of the power phase and feeling great about it!
This cleanse has been more challenging than I expected.
It’s not much fun being at home with a head ache, making juices and missing out on all the lovely foods I would usually gobble down. Looking forward to my Sunday roast next week!

My hydrotherapy session was brilliant. I will be going back again soon.

I would like to personally thank you. I know this will have a big impact on my life. I do eat fish and meat and diary, but I can feel I’ll be cutting right down. The main thing I’m grateful for is that you have raised my awareness of what I’m putting into my body. A big shift! So thank you again!

I will post a couple of my favourite juice recipes now.

Warmest wishes

Sophie
Hi Sophie

I am so pleased that you enjoyed your Cleanse & benefited from it so positively!

I am so sorry that you experienced headaches at home – poor you! Try not worry it gets easier every time you do it. I have got to the stage where I can comfortably go out to restaurants on the Cleanse and it’s ok! So no being stuck at home!

It would be fab if you could post a Review on the website? You can have a look at the reviews to see the kind of things that people have written, you may want to include things like:

Compared to now, how did you feel before the Cleanse? Any surprising outcomes? Would you recommend the Cleanse to friends?

Speak soon
xx

Miso
Hi Chris

Is miso okay on the cleanse?

thanks Maddie

Hi Maddie,

During the cleanse you are discouraged from imbibing Animal Protein.

There maybe some vegetarian miso options.

Regards,

Chris

I hope what I have is not animal protein as I am vegetarian. So if vegetarian it’s okay for me to use. It’s rice and soy

You may just want to check that your miso does not use animal protein, they usually use sardines from what I remember!

AM I ALLOWED?
Am I allowed to eat ordinary potatoes and ordinary white rice during mind and body cleanse? Can I drink any herbal packet teas?

Hi Natalia,

Than you for your email.

You can eat sweet potatoes, not ordinary potatoes during your Cleanse.

Likewise, it would be better to consume wild rice during your cleanse too.

You can drink any herbal packet teas.
Hi Chris,
Could you tell me what is the best juicer in your opinion? There are so many juicers on the market with very different price range. Which you you think is the best for the purpose of your detox? Thank you very much.

Hi Nathalie,

There is no need to overspend on your juicer.

I only recently stopped using a juicer I bought from Argos, 3 years ago for £30!!

At the moment I have a Phillips juicer – it’s excellent – it was a present.

On a separate note I am in the process of designing my own branded juicer, but this may take a while!!
Dear Chris,
Thank you so much for answering my questions.
I am sorry to hassle you again, but could you let me know which Phillips juicer you have, if possible please? I am so tired to trying to chose one and I trust your opinion.
I have tried several of your juice recipes by using my 20 yr old kenwood food processor. The juicers were very tasty but the processor wastes a lot of fruit/veg and it is a nightmare to clean. So please let me know which model you have. Sorry for persistence
Thank you so much.
Natalia.
Please come to Beckenham again. I missed you last time.

Hi Nathalie,

Here is is:

Philips HR1861 Aluminium Whole Fruit Juicer with Juice Jug and Cleaning Brush

You can buy them on Amazon!

Kind Regards,

Chris
p.s try to wash them when they have just been used!

Hi Chris

Can you just clarify if eggs are allowable? I have assumed not but can’t find them on either yes or no list

Cheers!

Gill

Hi Gilliane,

Thank you for your query.

Try to stay clear of eggs if you can, because they slow down the cleansing process.

If you are having egg cravings, then you can go for an egg white omelette – I know of a fab recipe if you need it.

On a separate note it says that you sent this query on Mon Apr 16? However, I have only just received it – please can you confirm? Thanks.

Regards,

Chris
Hi Chris – what’s the difference between rock salt and sea salt – why does the cleanse allow sea salt but no other kind?

Also the ‘no’ foods include dairy but some of your recipes include ghee and butter – am a bit confused.
Hi Alex,

You can take rock salt or sea salt ie organic sodium.

However sodium chloride ie.table salt should be avoided, and not just during the Cleanse, but also for long term health.

Regarding dairy, although the ‘no’ foods include dairy, ghee / butter is the exception in some ayurvedic recipes. During a Cleanse, you should not eat too much ghee and butter.

For example to cook with, it is better to use cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.

Chris

OK, thanks Chris. And during days 4-6 no salt at all, as in your daily email, is that right?

That’s correct.

Chris

Condiments and sauces
I’m about to start the Mind and Body Cleanse and I wonder if I’m allowed tobasco sauce as a condiment? I love it but am not sure if it’s counterproductive to the cleanse!

During the Cleanse it maybe better to give tobasco a wide berth for your Cleanse.

However, there are plenty of other condiments you can use during your cleanse – you can try lemon juice, olive oil with any herbs & spices you choose, maybe apart for tobasco!

Hope this helps!

Frequency of detox and colonic irrigation
Hi Chris,

1. How often should someone repeat 12 day detox and colonic irrigation therapy?

2. I am going to my 1st colonic treatment this Friday morning (on my 1st day in Power phase). Should I take my supplements and breakfast juice as normal before the treatment?

3. I have my 2nd treatment on Sunday afternoon. How long before the treatment I should have my juice on Sunday?

4. I notified you one day late via the START button, because of that I get emails from you one day late. Is it possible to re-sync the future mails to my detox calendar. Today is my day 5.

5. During power phase am I supposed to just extract the juice out of the fruit/veg or liquidise them all together with fibre and all?
Hi Apple,

In response to your queries:

1. How often should someone repeat 12 day detox and colonic irrigation therapy?

I recommend 2/3 times a year to maintain optimum levels of health & vitality.

2. I am going to my 1st colonic treatment this Friday morning (on my 1st day in Power phase). Should I take my supplements and breakfast juice as normal before the treatment?

Yes, as normal with breakfast.

3. I have my 2nd treatment on Sunday afternoon. How long before the treatment I should have my juice on Sunday?

You can have it whenever you like!

4. I notified you one day late via the START button, because of that I get emails from you one day late. Is it possible to re-sync the future mails to my detox calendar. Today is my day 5.

In your Welcome Letter, it specifically states to press the start button, the day before you start your Cleanse! Did you receive this letter? All packs are assigned a letter.

5. During power phase am I supposed to just extract the juice out of the fruit/veg or liquidise them all together with fibre and all?

Extract the juice with a juicer. We do not recommend blending fruit/veg during the Power Phase.

Hope this helps?

Thank you
Hi Chris,

Today is my last day and I am feeling great. I had 2 colonics during the power phase. My tummy is as flat as it used to be before kids now. I am very pleased with the results. Everyone around me complements to my skin, hair and in general how healthy I look.

I mentioned about the colonics irrigation to my GP today and he said that he does not recommend it as it changes the fluid and salt balance of the body. I am confused. After all the water went in also came out. Plus I drink 3-4 litres of water a day. What do you think?

Yoga week in Turkey: Do you go there every year? I couldn’t make it this June but I’d like to join you in one of these relaxing meditation weeks in Turkey if it happens again. I do regular yoga and enjoy the benefits of it but I must admit I am still a beginner.

Thank you very much for this great experience and your support.

Re: Frequency of detox and colonic irrigation

Hi Apple,

Great to hear from you!

I am so pleased that you have come through the Mind&Body Cleanse with such great results. (May I say, that you are not the only one!)

RE: colonics irrigation & GP’s – not the greatest mix! Unfortunately, GP’s simply do not know about the benefits of colonic hydrotherapy as they should. It is a shame, because such knowledge was once known when the ‘western’ approach to medicine was devised with Galen and Hippocrates. It is not true that it changes the fluid and salt balance in the body radically enough to cause any harm whatsoever. Perhaps if you did a few everyday it might change things, but that is highly unlikely. Regrettably, these days GP’s are more interested in prescribing pills from the larger Phrama companies than finding a cure.

Turkey is full this year, Bali is not (yet). You can see it on the website.

You are welcome to all of the support I can give you, I loved what you said about :

‘Today is my last day and I am feeling great. I had 2 colonics during the power phase. My tummy is as flat as it used to be before kids now. I am very pleased with the results. Everyone around me complements to my skin, hair and in general how healthy I look.’

Thank you,

Colonic Cleanse
I live in the United States… Miami Florida… do you have a place to recommend here? Also what if I do not do this procedure during my 12 day cleanse

Hi,

To optimise the effects of the Cleanse colonic hydrotherapy is highly recommended, although you can complete the Cleanse without doing colonic hydrotherapy, it just won’t be quite as thorough.

I am not sure what the equivalent of ARCH (Association of Registered colonic hydrotherapists) is in the USA, but I have contacted the chairman in the UK and they may be able to help?

I will revert in due course.

Chris

You can try: International Association of Colon Hydrotherapists http://www.i-act.org

You may be able to find your local therapist from this website,

Use of caffeine during a colonic
Dear Chris

I am currently following your detox programme and I am about to enter the Power Phase tomorrow and have planned colonics.

Just a quick question, when I followed your detox two years ago and went for a colonic the women used caffeine during the treatment. Do you think this is okay giving that one isn’t consuming caffeine during the detox?

Thank you very much

Natasha

Re: Use of caffeine during a colonic

Hi Natasha,

Thanks for your question:

Fine to use caffeine during the treatment, as it does not pass through the stomach.

Good Luck with the Power Phase tomorrow

Thank you

Chris
Side Effects
Hello
I am on day four of the cleanse and have never done one before. As you stated in the pamphlet for side effects, I have been having headaches and now I seem to have muscle and joint pain? Could this be part of the process or is something different going on?
Thanks
Re: Side Effects
Hi Kaligirl,

I do hope that your headaches have now subsided, they certainly should have done by now.
People respond in all sorts of different ways to Cleansing and detoxification, headaches and a bit of muscle pain is actually quite normal. However symptoms should subside in due course.

Let me know if you have any other queries…
Re: Side Effects
Hi Chris

It’s day 4 and I woke up in the night with bad lower back pain? I’ve had to get up early as it’s that uncomfortable, can I take pain killers? Catherine
Re: Side Effects
Me again, now i’m up and walking about the pain seems to be going? could it be trapped wind? just thought that would be in my stomach area not my lower back?
Re: Side Effects
I still have lower back pain, hardly slept last night as it hurts to lie down and sit down the only time when it doesn’t hurt too much is when i’m walking around? I went on the internet last night as I haven’t heard back from you as I was starting to get worried and it says it could be the build up of toxins in my lower spine? Is this right? I also feel quite constipated and don’t feel that great at all to be honest and I’m on day 5!? I haven’t cheated and I really don’t want to give up but i’m in quite a lot of pain and don’t know what to do? Have been drinking loads of water to!!???

Hi Catherine,

This sounds very unusual.

I do not think that it is a build up of toxins in your lower spine.

Have your symptoms got any better during the course of the day?

Whereabouts is the pain in your lower back? Please be specific…

Have you booked in your colonic with an Arch member during your Power Phase. This will help with the constipation for sure.

If the pain persists, you may need to consider stopping the Cleanse.

Let me know how it goes.

Best of luck,

Chris

Hi Chris

Thanks for the chat yesterday, I feel a bit better today, couldn’t get a colonic today but the lady I see said she would see me tomorrow and Monday so hopefully that should help me out and the pain will go completely!

Day 6 today and feel good, will keep you posted!

Catherine
Re: Side Effects
Hi Catherine,

Let me know how it goes…
Re: Side Effects
All went fine I think I just hadn’t drunk nearly enough water!!!

Re: Side Effects

Fantastic well done you!!
Insomnia
I am having awful trouble sleeping. My sleep pattern is never brilliant but now it’s worse, and I have to get up for a pee at least 3 times in the night. I feel fine during the day, energy levels and clarity of mind superb but I really miss my sleep. Is there any thing in the supplements that cause this? I am on day 6 so will persevere. I read one of tips for sleeplessness is sea salt at night in water but salt is a no no on the cleanse. Any tips?
Re: Insomnia
Hi Maddie,

Your sleep patterns should be correcting themselves soon. they will certainly be better as a result of the Cleanse experience. So hang on in there!

Regarding your peeing, your body has geared into detoxification mode so it will need to eliminate more than usual.

Regarding sea salt at night in water – that’s ok if you want to try it to see if it works, just providing you don’t add any to your cooking!

A good breathing technique for insomnia is to take 10 minutes out before you go to bed, sit down and focus on your breath.
Place your hand flat on your belly, so that the middle fingers join at the navel.

Focus on the rising and falling of the belly, and very gently try to extend the exhalation for a second or so. You will become sleepy and ready for bed!

A bit confused
I’m sorry am a bit confused of what I should be eating differently from day 1-3 to days 4-6?

Hi Catherine,

Nothing! You eat the same things during these two phases…

The preparation phase is there for people who are very toxic or who need a bit more time to put their crutches down such as meat or processed foods.

Hope this helps?

Chris
Perfect! Thank you! x

Breakfast suggestions

Hi – am planning to start my detox diet at the end of the week and am impressed with all of the nice lunch and dinner options have seen – however, can somebody suggest some good breakfast options other than just eating fruit?

Hi Bernie,

There are some delicious recipe ideas on page 23 of your brochure which comes with the pack!

Try the muesli, I have it every day!

I did see this recipe in the booklet – realistically, I’m not going to make it! Any easy options – or should I just eat fruit?

Hi Bernie, if you wanted you could of course just eat fruit, but this may not set you up sufficiently for the whole day.

Any high street health shop will stock the ingredients as listed on page 23. It will take you 10 minutes to purchase the ingredients and 5 minutes to mix it up in a large bowl so that you can help yourself throughout the course of the cleanse! so the initial set up will be all it takes and this is the beauty of it….let me know how you get on!

Hi Chris – thanks, that does make it sound easier – just panicked at length of ingredient list! And I imagine I should have it with rice milk which I’ve seen recommended elsewhere in the guide? Is soy milk acceptable? Also, can I eat porridge?

Hi Bernie, pleased to hear it sounds easier – I have posted a lovely porridge recipe in the discussion foryums alreday, and here it is:

Cinnamon Fruit Porridge
Made with millet or oat and water. Served with almond milk, rice milk, or oat milk.
40g whole rolled porridge oats
1tbsp ground cinnamon
Plus any fruit, chopped, grated, or left whole
Place the oats in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then gently simmer, stirring
until the porridge thickens. Sprinkle a handful of mixed seeds, such as sesame, pumpkin,
sunflower, linseeds. Add a teaspoon of raw organic honey or organic maple syrup to
taste.

Try using almond mik with your porridge. Rice milk is ok too.

Regarding Soy, I am afraid that I do not know enough about soy milk to comment – Ii know that it has been linked to GM, and infertility issues, so personally I leave it alone!

Hope this helps,

Chris

Recipes
Hi,

I’m due to start my cleanse on Sunday – does anyone have any good recipes for breakfast and lunch, which I could take to work? We have a fridge and microwave in the office.

Thanks so much,
Victoria

Hi Victoria,

Thank you for your post – I am sorry I didn’t catch sight of it until today!

If you go to page 23 of your brochure, whcih you would have been provided with your M&B Cleanse, you will find some lovely breakfast options.

For a change you can try one of my old favourites to keep you going…

Cinnamon Fruit Porridge
Made with millet or oat and water. Served with almond milk, rice milk, or oat milk.
40g whole rolled porridge oats
1tbsp ground cinnamon
Plus any fruit, chopped, grated, or left whole
Place the oats in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then gently simmer, stirring
until the porridge thickens. Sprinkle a handful of mixed seeds, such as sesame, pumpkin,
sunflower, linseeds. Add a teaspoon of raw organic honey or organic maple syrup to
taste.

Hope this helps!

Recipes

Hi all,
I made the borlotti bean stew with sweet potatoes on monday night and it was delicious, I can really recommend it. Had to fight my boyfriend off it as he is not on the cleanse and can eat whatever he wants. I felt very protective over my yummy meal and wasn’t prepared to share!
Getting ready for the upcoming power phase…
Katie

Hi Katie

That’s the fun of it, delicious recipes for optimum health and results!

Re: Recipes
well done Katie, I have to ssay that the borlotti bean recipe is one of my favourites – but no fighting in the kitchen please!
New Year Health Plans
I am interested to know what everybody’s health plans are for the new year?

Re: New Year Health Plans
I live near a landfill site and we have been having problems with emissions from this site, some of which are known carcinogens. My aim is to raise awareness amongst the local community about these ‘toxic’ emissions, but also to strengthen my own immune system. I think I am going to need it as we are going to have a battle on our hands to prevent extension of the landfill, and I seem to have been elected as the spokesperson. I haven’t done Yoga for many years, not since I really needed it, íf you understand my meaning, but now I think I am going to need it again to help get me through what I think are going to be challenging exchanges with the Environment Agency, Local Authorities and Waste Operators. I need to keep a cool head and try to prevent the ‘red mist’ from descending. Linda Booth

Re: New Year Health Plans
Hi Linda, sounds like you have a big job ahead of you, and you will need to stay strong physically and mentally for 2011.

You are welcome to come to my Yoga classes that I hold across London, returners are weclome If you are wanting to strengthen your immune system against the toxic compounds from the landfill you should try my Mind&Body Cleanse – that will certainly stop teh red mist from descending too!

Quorn

Yes, Quorn is ok!

Let me know if you have any more queries!

Good Luck

Giving blood

Hi Alex,

Mmmm – interesting question!

I have certainly never been asked this before.

I always say if in doubt, consult your health practitioner, which you should do in any case.

The final call will be up to you – I can predict that if you decide to go ahead you will feel extremely tired.

Can you wait until after the Power Phase, when you are back on solid food? Just a thought.

Chris
