10 Jun Why Do Men Seek out One on One Yoga?
This week MEN’S HEALTH WEEK 2019 focuses on the key numbers in men’s health.
Men are supposedly obsessed with numbers but when it comes to our own health, there are quite a few more numbers that we should know about.
This blog post will feature on the importance of 1:1 yoga for men. 1:1 Yoga for men has grown in popularity in recent years – from top sportsmen to high-flying executives, men are taking yoga more seriously, but it isn’t all about being ‘bendy’!
When I first started teaching Yoga privately, I took for granted that I would be spending much of my professional life in Hampstead Garden Suburbs, teaching the wives of the wealthy. However, nothing could have been further from the truth.
Over the years, as much as 75% of my one on one clients have been men.
One on One Yoga for Men
While it is true that we see an increasing trend of men turning to yoga and meditation to stay healthy and relax, being a popular choice for those in stressful jobs who work long hours. My own experience, is that male clients prefer my no nonsense approach to the subject, not unlike the Masters who had taught me in India. Unlike my masters in India however, I have chosen not to mix metaphysics with anatomy, or entangle physiology to the esoteric.
The result was a systematic and deeply nurturing practice that has attracted leading business figures, sportsmen, and artists. Of particular note, a long standing client who holds down a global role at a Footsie 100 company, also competes in the Iron Man competitions, and is a big fan of our 360 degree approach. He says that it has enabled him to improve on his performance in the Iron Man competition, and gives him the edge in the boardroom, as well as much needed guided relaxation at the end of the week.
The fact is that all Yoga should be taught, one on one. This follows the traditional Master / Pupil model, and is how all Yoga used to be taught and passed down from generation to generation. Yoga classes however are more of a western adaptation of this traditional model.
One on one sessions allow knowledge of Yoga, diet and lifestyle to be applied to the individual, rather than the individual to the Yoga.
